ABSTRACT
Wastewater treatment facilities are crucial infrastructures for managing water resources, but they incur significant energy expenses. In North America, these facilities consume 1-4 percent of the nation's energy output, while in Europe, the figure stands at about 1 percent. Through a funded project in northern Portugal, the primary energy-consuming components were identified, including aeration equipment for biological treatment (58 percent), intake pumping (9 percent), deodorization (8 percent), and sludge treatment equipment (6 percent). Evaluating the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is vital for the sustainability and growth of water service organizations and for enhancing management practices. Embracing circular economy principles involves implementing circular economy business models (CEBMs), aiming for more cost effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable technologies. Keywords: Wastewater treatment station, Energy consumption, Bioenergy.
